You want to lower your centre of gravity as you corner.

One way to do that is to drop your outside foot in a corner and your centre of gravity should automatically drop.
It also has the added benefit of lifting the inside pedal so that there’s less chance of your pedal catching as you corner.
You can lean the bike farther. You’ll come out of the corner easier.  

Less experienced riders probably want more security and safety during a ride. Dropping the outside foot is good advice.
But as rides become more technical and challenging, or you want to be faster, then more control is required.
